I have lost count of the number of times I have recalled my past or used it as an excuse for my present state.
When in actual fact, it shouldn’t matter! We are guilty of blaming our past for how we are. I know I am! I blamed my insecurity on my parents breaking up, I blamed my victim mentality on the bullies that picked on me at school (and it was often about being from a single parent family!)
I also blamed my identity crisis, fixation on girls and sexual insecurity on the man who groomed and abused me in my teens. And some would say I would be within my rights to do that. But holding resentment in my heart will only ever hurt me, it won’t affect the people that hurt me! So ultimately I would be hurt twice!
Whatever our life experience, we mustn’t allow our past to dictate our future, to define who we are! Like the boy beaten by his Dad who becomes a thug, we mustn’t allow our hurts to mould us into a shape we were never meant to be!
What really matters is who you are, and Whose You Are!
You were bought with a price, Christ’s own life! That means you are valuable to Him!
When the Shepherd finds the lost sheep, he doesn’t berate it for getting lost, rather he celebrates finding it again!
When Jesus was presented with a woman who had been caught in adultery the Pharisees wanted to stone her, to fulfil the law. But Jesus saw that each one had secrets and said, “let him who is without sin, throw the first stone!” As he said this he doodled in the sand with his finger…
When he looked up they had all dropped their stones and left. He asked the woman, “who has condemned you?” She replied, “no one, Master!” And he told her, “neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more!”
When Jesus looks into each of our hearts we realise we have no right to condemn others because of the blackness of of our own hearts. He drew a line in the sand and said to the woman, don’t cross that again! That’s not part of your life anymore!
Paul wrote, “there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Rom 8:1
He also wrote, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
Paul, witnessed and stoned many people out his dedication to the law, yet he wrote this upon realising that Grace is greater than the law! Grace says you deserve the punishment but I will take it for you! It is like a judge telling a murderer, “you deserve to die, but I’ll go to the chair in your stead!” That is how radical the message of the gospel is! And it remains so today!
So please today do not allow your past, your failings and your labels to dictate who you are, but live in the sure knowledge that if you live in the knowledge of Christ and His salvation from sin, you are a new creation! Old things have passed away, behold! Everything has been made new!
